Air Questions

Q: Should you change air filters by miles or hours?
A: Air filters should be changed only by engine manufacturer's recommendations on air restriction as measured by an air restriction gauge.

Q: Will air filter efficiency change during the filter's life?
A: Air filter efficiency changes over time. Air filters are least efficient when new; dirt buildup on the outside of the filter makes it more efficient over time.

Q: What is the difference between Cummins Filtration's Magnum and standard line of air filters?
A: Magnum air filters have more square inches of media which extend filter life.

Q: How often should I change my safety element?
A: Safety or inner elements should be changed every third change of the primary element. Safety filters should not be disturbed until this interval has been reached.

Q: What is Cummins Filtration's recommended air filter change interval?
A: Cummins Filtration recommends changing the air filter once you have reached 80% of the engine manufacturer's recommendations on air restriction. This ensures minimum downtime during filter change intervals.

Q: What is a Radial Seal air filter?
A: Radial Seal is an air filter that is sealed radially at the inner diameter. Conventional air filters generally have gaskets glued on a metal endplate and seal when the gasket is compressed against the air housing. The radial seal, made from polyurethane, is molded as part of the endplate. The sealing occurs by pushing the air filter into the corresponding air housing. In the air housing, a conical adapter fits on the air outlet (clean air side) of the housing.

Q: Why is grease supplied with each Radial Seal air filter?
A: Grease is currently applied at the factory at the time of production.

Q: What are the comparative advantages of Radial Seal air filters above conventional air filters?
A: Radial Seal air filters are easier to install and require minimum handling (i.e., tightening with wingnut, or bolting to housing is not required). Also, because there are fewer components involved (i.e., no gluing of gasket to endplate or of filter media to endplate), there is less chance of failures.

Q: Can I use a conventional safety element with Radial Seal primary filters and vice versa?
A: No. Once your filter housing has been adapted to use Radial Seal air filters, you must use a radial seal type filter. If your housing has not been adapted for radial seal filters, you must use the standard type filter for proper internal sealing.

Q: What is the micron rating of Cummins Filtration air filters?
A: Air filters are measured on an efficiency basis over a wide range of particle sizes. Micron ratings do not apply to air filters.

Q: What's the meaning of extension K in a Cummins Filtration air filter reference?
A: Extension K stands for an air filter element equipped with fins. Air filters with fins are used on off-highway equipment (i.e., earth-moving, mining , agriculture applications). The fins are functioning as a precleaner to extend the life of the filter element itself.
